The Domínguez-Escalante Expedition was led by Franciscan missionaries Father Francisco Atanasio Domínguez and Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante to explore a possible route from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Monterey, California by heading northwest out of Santa Fe. The route took the party up into Utah, crossed the Green River and headed west. They crossed into the southern portion of present day Utah Valley near what is now Spanish Fork.
