August 2022 - DIRECTOR GENE NELSON RETIRES, CARLA GORDON APPOINTED AS NEW LIBRARY DIRECTOR
On August 4, 2022, Library Director Gene Nelson retired after 25 years of diligent service at the Provo City Library.
Gene Nelson had many visions for the Provo City Library that became a reality. He was born July 28, 1952 to Willard Eugene Sr. and Freda McAfee Nelson in Mesa, Arizona. He graduated from BYU in 1979 with a Master of Library Science degree. He spent the first 19 years of his library career in Las Vegas, working in an elementary school, a community college, and three different public libraries. After supervising two successful library construction projects as the director, he came to Provo to oversee the restoration of the Brigham Young Academy from 1997-2001. He then served as the director of the Provo City Library at Academy Square.
Gene was instrumental in making the Provo City Library a landmark and hub for the community. The library’s innovative spaces—the elegant ballroom, the art gallery and Attic exhibition spaces, and the Basement Creative Lab—provide a welcoming venue for popular events such as reading symposiums, Valentine’s Ball, and countless visits from authors around the world. He served as the Utah Library Association president from 2004-05 and on several committees for the Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC), particularly the prestigious Caldecott (2000 & 2010) and Newbery (2016-17) committees.
Throughout his life, Gene loved the world of books, but his greatest love was for children’s literature. The children’s wing of the library was a beloved restoration project, evidenced by the colorful Story Circle and imagination-inducing Story Room. He enthusiastically supported many popular children’s programs, such as Big Guy/Little Guy, children’s reading festivals, and the magical Fairy Tea Party, in which he made his annual appearance as the renowned “Fairy King.”
He and his wife Lori have six children and sixteen grandchildren. They all love to read.
Carla Zollinger Gordon has been appointed by the Library Board as the new library director. Carla holds a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington. She was hired as a librarian at the Provo City Library back during the Center Street Library days. She has worked as a reference librarian, Circulation Supervisor, Adult and Teen Services Manager, and most recently as the Assistant Director of Library Operations.
